About Emmanuel Perrodin-Njoku

Emmanuel Perrodin-Njoku

Current M.D. student in medical school (UW-Madison)

Emmanuel is one of the very few Deaf people with expertise in the medical field (as an MD student) AND in the field of ASL interpretation. He has previously worked as a translator in Gallaudet University's Center for Deaf Health Equity where he produced English-to-ASL videos about cancer. He also worked as an ASL consultant supporting many higher-education interpreters with their STEM-related interpreting skills. Now, he recognizes the importance of training healthcare interpreters to provide clear & appropriate interpretation of healthcare concepts. He has decided to share his expertise with YOU!

In this online course like no other, you will watch video-recorded snippets of Emmanuel's popular lecture that he gave to an audience of healthcare interpreters as well as Deaf professionals in the healthcare field.

This first course is called "ASL Medical Terminology" where you will get an overview of some medical terminology -- broken down into 4 broad categories: anatomical parts, diseases, tests, and procedures. You'll learn how to interpret the questions in the MRI screening checklist, how to interpret the instructions for various eye tests, and many, many more topics.

In the near future, Emmanuel may come back again to provide Zoom sessions to engage more with healthcare interpreters (as well as students-in-training). To get announcements for the next Zoom session with Emmanuel, please subscribe to the Signplaying email list at http://eepurl.com/iFMWMs.

FAQ

  • What do you expect me to do in this course?

This course is entirely self-paced. You will watch video lessons and take a final exam. You are not required to interact with the instructor or other students. But if you wish, you may post questions or comments in the community page, and I will do my best to respond to any questions within 72 hours on weekdays.

  • For how long will I be able to access this course?

After purchasing this course, you will have access to it for as long as this web platform is used. It is guaranteed that this course will be offered through December 31, 2026. After that date, the instructor may decide to retire this course. If that's the case, there will be an announcement posted in the Signplaying community page, and you will still be able to access the course for one more month after the announcement.

  • Does this course offer RID CEU credit?

This course offers 0.6 Professional Studies (PS) CEU credit at the Some Content Knowledge Level. To obtain the RID CEU, you will have to complete the entire course and pass the Final Exam with a minimum score of 80%. (If you fail the Final Exam, you can retake it for as many times as you need.) Then, you will get a course completion email with a link to the course evaluation. In the course evaluation, you don't need to answer all the questions, but you will need to submit your full name (as recorded in the RID system) and your RID member number. After you have submitted that course evaluation form with these two required information, I will work with the CMP sponsor (Interpretek) to process your CEU within several weeks.

  • Does this course offer a Certificate of Completion?

Yes. The course provides specific instructions for how you can get your Certificate of Completion.

  • Where does my money go when I pay for this course?

100% of your payment for this course goes directly to support Emmanuel's tuition toward finishing medical school.
