About Asma Wahid

Asma Wahid

Current Ph.D. student in organic chemistry lab (New York University)

Asma Wahid is one of the very few Deaf people with expertise in chemistry (as a Ph.D. student in an organic chemistry lab) AND in the field of ASL translation. She has previously worked as a translator and a team leader in an organic chemistry sign language lexicon (featured in ASLCORE), which has won an award from the UK-based Royal Society of Chemistry. Now, she recognizes the importance of training educational (and healthcare) interpreters to provide clear & apporprate intepretation of chemistry concepts. She has decided to share her expertise with YOU!

FAQ

  • How is this course different than the other one called "ASL Chemistry Terminology"?

The other course called "ASL Chemistry Terminology" is focused on classifier use for each chemistry term. You are recommended to take that course before this "Interpreting Chemistry into ASL" course because this course will apply various concepts in interpreting actual lecture, lab, and word problems.

  • What do you expect me to do in this course?

This course is entirely self-paced. You will watch video lessons and take a final exam. You are not required to interact with the instructor or other students. But if you wish, you may post questions or comments in the community page, and I will do my best to respond to any questions within 72 hours on weekdays.

  • For how long will I be able to access this course?

After purchasing this course, you will have access to it for as long as this web platform is used. It is guaranteed that this course will be offered through December 31, 2026. After that date, the instructor may decide to retire this course. If that's the case, there will be an announcement posted in the Signplaying community page, and you will still be able to access the course for one more month after the announcement.

  • Does this course offer RID CEU credit?

This course offers 0.3 Professional Studies (PS) CEU credit at the Some Content Knowledge Level. To obtain the RID CEU, you will have to complete the entire course and pass the Final Exam with a minimum score of 80%. (If you fail the Final Exam, you can retake it for as many times as you need.) Then, you will get a course completion email with a link to the course evaluation. In the course evaluation, you don't need to answer all the questions, but you will need to submit your full name (as recorded in the RID system) and your RID member number. After you have submitted that course evaluation form with these two required information, I will work with the CMP sponsor (Interpretek) to process your CEU within several weeks.

  • Does this course offer a Certificate of Completion?

Yes. The course provides specific instructions for how you can get your Certificate of Completion.

  • Where does my money go when I pay for this course?

100% of your payment for this course goes directly to support Asma's tuition toward finishing her Ph.D. program in her organic chemistry lab.
